Maximum number of students: 20
Description
In this studio you are offered the opportunity to move beyond the limitations of other media and experience the free and expansive art of sculpture.
Work with wire, metal, plastic and wood to learn brazing, welding, melting and assemblage techniques. You may wish to carve Oamaru stone or plaster. Perhaps you could try using wax and plastilina to model forms for bronze casting or simply to explore three dimensional form.
The practice of sculpture in terms of materials and processes is incredibly broad, you may wish to explore a traditional approach or blaze a trail as unique as you are! Suitable for all levels of experience.
Content:
From an initial proposal, you will plan and produce work based on your own ideas. There will be a field trip to look at a variety of work too. You will benefit from and be asked to do additional research to expand your awareness in your area of interest, and will be supported through discussion with your tutor in the development of your work. We will focus on the practice of safe and responsible use of art media, equipment and studio space.
Objectives:
Create sculpture that effectively communicates subject matter, metaphor, themes and symbols... your individually conceived concept.
Outcomes:
You will have the experience of 'doing it'. Along the way you will learn about materials and processes you employ in creating your sculptural work. Class discussion will address principles and elements of Art and Design relevant to sculpture.
